High Summer, Beach Look

I have created some initial mood boards based on my initial ideas and reactions to this brief. Although NARS advertisement campaigns don't do on location shoots i wanted to really get that beach feel, i think lighting will be very important for this shoot and something i will have to consider through out. I want this look to be a very natural glowing beach look but with an sexy edginess to to it such as in the images below a black liner has been used or pastel peach lip and the messy intricacy of the braids i feel brings something new to the beach look that has not been seen done a lot previously.

NARS keeps most of there high summer look's very clean and polished much like many of there other advertisement campaigns. Although they stick with this clean sleek feel i want to bring an edginess to these images and the look i will create. NARS focuses on the natural real every day woman its aim is to make everyone feel there best.

Makeup
I want to create that beach sun kissed glow in the skin, with peachy golden undertones. I love the grundge look on the eyes, just looking at using liner on the bottom of the eye, i like the idea that this could just be smudged mascara from getting out the sea adding bronze brown tones creates a more glamorous sexy look. Freckles were a big statement on the S/S15 catwalks and i feel this enhances the sun kissed feel while making a comment that the women is a natural beauty not using tones of foundation and airbrushing covering them up i like this element.

Face Chart
I wanted to included all the elements i featured in my mood board: dewy skin, sun kissed glow, bronzed, smudged bottom liner, freckles, peach and golden tones.
I have included all those elements within this face chart, the look is really effective it encompasses the beach, high summer feel, but also is very relatable to NARS in the fact that its not an extreamly natural look it plays with colour tones and placement of texture.

Makeup Experimentation
Eye
I tried the exact colour tones i used in my face chart on the eye, i feel that the peach tones works very well with the bronze brown and black underneath, i feel that the mascara is important within this look, when i hadn't applied it the eye looked to grundge, and the shape of the eye looked odd with just the black underneath. I feel that i could emphasis the smokey liner even more in the shoot to create more impact.
Lip
I wanted to play around with both the lip tone and texture, as the colour tones from the chart alway are very different to on the lip itself.
MAC LipGloss
although this is a high gloss texture of which i like, i feel that the tone is wrong for the rest of the look its a very pink tone unlike on the face chart it showed more peach.

Mac Lipstick & Gloss
I tested a peach, nude tone MAC lipstick with hints of the gloss over it, i prefer the colour tone of this with the eye.
 MAC Lipstick
Here i have used the mac lip stick alone, i feel out of all of the above looks this works the best, the colour tone works with the eye complimenting the peach tone of the eye. The natural tone of the lip also looks more in keeping with the beach feel than the gloss above as its natural a natural texture and shade.

Test Shots Makeup
I have done some test shots of the final makeup look. I am pleased with how everything looks on camera, all the colour tones within the look work well together although when looking at these images i do feel i could add more bronze and contour to put emphasis on the beach bronzed element.

Hair
Plaits are and will always be a summer statement, the bohemian halo braid has connotations to the beach and has a relaxed feel about the style. I like the idea of incorporating many different styles of plaits into this one style creating an intricacy into a simple relaxed look.

Braid Experimentation
I played around with my favourite 3 types of plaits learnt in our technical lessons: The fish tail, wiggle and 5 braid, i want to create a intricate relaxed, bohemian style.

Fish Tail & Wiggle: the variation in texture within these images is really interesting, i like the fact that you can't tell were necessarily one plait starts and the other ends.

5 Braid, Fish Tail & Wiggle: To these two plaits i added a 5 piece plait this was defiantly the statement between them, i think that the 5 braid plait would look effective as the halo braid around the front of the style and the fish tail and wiggle plaits to make up the back of the style and the intricacy of these works well together.

I have future practised on a doll on the positioning of the 5 piece plait at the front leaving some of the hair to frame the face.

Final Hair Chart
From my experimentation above i have created a hair chart on the placement of the plaits, i wanted the front of the style to be relaxed expressing that summer chilled feel. I have decided on the 5 piece plait wrapping around the front of the head, then the fish tail and wiggle plaits to twist around at the back of the head. I want the hair texture is be relaxed so i will curl the hair before styling to add texture creating this soft beach wave. I don't want the style to look polished so fly aways within the style will add to this  relaxed feel.
Equipment&Products:
-Straighteners (to curl)
-Hair spray
-Pin Tail Comb
-bun pins
-bobbie pins
-clear hair bands
Step 1:
Using the straighteners section and curl the whole head. Section the hair into a middle parting taking the side bottom section below the era, plait a 5 piece plait on each side and tie secure.
Step 2:
Section from the crown to the centre of the head and slightly backcomb to create lift and extra texture, on the left top side create a fish tail plait and the same on the middle right hand side tiring secure. with the excess hair create 2 wiggle plaits in the sections left.
Step 3:
Taking the 5 braid plaits wrap over the top of the head and pin into place, pulling the plait out to look more relaxed and thicker. with the back section wrap around the fish tail plaits and pin into place pulling out again to add thickness to the plait. Using a piece of material wipe over the hair to add soft fly aways to the style.

Lighting
This is a very important part of my final images, i want that golden summer glow projected onto the skin, creating a high summer intimate relaxed beach feel. I don't want the lighting to be harsh and show every colour and contour of the skin. This mood board explores the ideas i want to portray within the images, relaxed summer evening intimate and sultry.

Final Images
{NARS- HIGH SUMMER}
The relaxed feel to both the hair and makeup style was enjoyable to create. I was pleased with my final images they portray a beach natural beauty, yet the key elements such as the smokey liner on the bottom of the eye and interweaving plaits add interest into a style that could easterly be transformed into a summer evening look or even a day time event as well.
I felt the hair was a strong point to this shoot, the models hair was not as thick as i would have liked so the style was slightly compromised at the front, this 5 braid i would have loved to be a lot more chunky and strong, but i feel the back worked effectively.
With the makeup i feel i achieved the natural beauty look with a twist NARS says there about rule breaking within makeup using the smudged liner on the bottom of the eye instead of the top shows the women buying from NARS you can play with makeup in a way that its were able for them this is a key point i wanted to show within these ad images.
The freckles didn't show up in the photographs this is something i could have applied more of for them to be very visible in my final images. The final images evoke the beach natural high summer feel the lighting used in both the first four images and last few images portrays the golden, bright, dewy high summer feel. I could see these images advertising a summer pallet of golden hues and smokey tones a pallet that is your go to for any look in summer be it for the beach or for an evening event.
